Pickleball a fun sport for all ages at Teravista

Pickleball has been called the fastest-growing sport in America, and one of the first pickleball courts in the Austin area is a popular feature of Teravista Lake Park.
What is pickleball? It’s a paddle sport created for all ages and skill levels, combining many elements of tennis, badminton and ping-pong. It’s played on a badminton-sized court with a slightly modified tennis net, with players using a paddle and plastic ball.
The rules are simple and the game is easy for beginners to learn, but pickleball can also develop into a quick, fast-paced, competitive game for experienced players. In tennis and other net sports, where games are often won and lost by the power of the serve. In pickleball, the ball must bounce once on each side before volleys are allowed. Pickleball is fast becoming part of P.E. classes in middle and high schools. It’s also being adopted in many retirement communities. In short, it’s a great sport for every member of the family, from 5 to 85.
There are nearly 2.5 million pickleball players in the U.S. and that number is growing fast. Pickleball is also growing in Asia and Europe.
Pickleball was invented in 1965 near Seattle by three dads who wanted to create a new summertime activity for their kids, who were bored with their usual routines.
As for the name, legend has it that pickleball was named for Pickle, the family dog of one of the inventors, who would chase the ball and run off with it.
Along with its pickleball court, Teravista Lake Park also offers trails that meander through meadows of wildflowers and along the shores of the community’s largest lake. The wind-powered kinetic sculpture is another focal point.
