Whether you live in Teravista already or are still thinking about moving here, you’ll be glad to know there are plenty of nearby activities to keep kids enriched and engaged while our highly regarded Georgetown ISD and Round Rock ISD schools are on summer break. Here are our Top 10 Picks for kid-friendly summer fun. Some are so close you can get there in a few minutes, while some others make for an unforgettable day trip.

  1. Rock’N River Water Park – There are many new features to discover at this Round Rock water park, which has more than doubled in size after a huge expansion that was unveiled over Memorial Day weekend. The Splashville playground has 51 play features. The Quarry is a high adventure area with a 12.5-foot jumping platform and a rock-climbing wall with a waterfall. The Watering Hole has a leisure lagoon and food service area – and there’s much more to explore.

  2. Check out the “Best of Round Rock” – The 3rd annual “Best of Round Rock” reader’s choice results offer lots of ideas for kids’ activities. Check out their results page to see the top 3 choices in 11 helpful categories, including Best Playground, Best Children’s Classes and Best Toy Store.

  3. Inner Space Cavern – One of the (literally) coolest kid-friendly places in Texas is just a short drive from Teravista, in Georgetown. Inner Space Cavern, where the temperature is a constant 72 degrees, has rocks that are roughly 100 million years old. Several tours are offered, from the beginning Adventure Tour to the advanced off-trail Wild Cave Tour.

  4. Austin Steam Train Association – Kids love trains, and the Austin Steam Train Association offers many kid-friendly excursions departing from nearby Cedar Park. There’s the Summertime Limited, the Independence Day Express and the Sunset Express, just to name a few. Kids can discover nature and history at stops in Burnet and Bertram.

  5. Creative Playscape – Consistently voted one of the best kids’ activities in Georgetown, the Creative Playscape encourages children to learn about history and nature. For example, the triple slide represents the waterfalls along the San Gabriel River, and the big boulder and Tee Pee invite young visitors to learn about early Native American settlements along the river’s limestone bluffs.

  6. Swimming Holes – Central Texas has no shortage of popular swimming holes for cool and free (or at least very cheap) summer fun. Georgetown’s beloved Blue Hole, a scenic lagoon bordered by the limestone bluffs of the South Fork of the San Gabriel River, is closest to Teravista. Hamilton Pool, with its stunning 50-foot waterfall and constant 50-degree temperature, is part of the scenic Balcones Canyonlands Preserve. Other popular swimming spots include Krause Springs in Spicewood, Jacob’s Well in Wimberley, and Barton Springs in Austin.

  7. Hawaiian Falls Pflugerville Adventure Park – Because there can never be too many suggestions for staying cool during the hot Texas summer, we’re also including Hawaiian Falls in nearby Pflugerville. Attractions include the Waterslide Mega Complex, the six-story Sky Pfall and the 54-inch tube slide at Diamond Head Drop.

  8. Bass Pro Shops – We’re mentioning this outdoor mega store because it’s so close to Teravista and filled with activities beyond shopping. There’s an indoor bowling alley, a 16,000-gallon aquarium stocked with fish native to the area, a nautical-themed restaurant with a saltwater aquarium, and special events such as Family Summer Camp.

  9. Learn Golf for Life – Right at Teravista, the kids can enjoy junior golf lessons at the championship Teravista Golf Club. J.L. Lewis, director of instruction, is a highly experienced teacher, author and two-time PGA champion.

  10. All Over Austin - It’s easy to get just about anywhere in the Austin area from Teravista, so we’re including this handy link to fun and (often) free family activities all over the metro area. There are kids’ events at the Blanton Museum, Nature Nights at the Wildflower Center, outdoor family movies, children’s theater and much more. Explore and enjoy!
